British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
